D-Serine is an amino acid found in high levels in the mammalian brain. It serves as a neurotransmitter by co-activating NMDA receptors that also bind glutamate, just like glycine does, increasing glutamate’s excitatory effect. Research has show D-serine can reduce symptoms of cognitive decline, especially in disorders related to low NMDA signaling such as schizophrenia. An increase in D-serine levels is also linked to greater attention, less anxiety, and an overall feeling of cognitive well-being.
